US Sanctions Palestinian Rights Groups Over ICC Cooperation

The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on three prominent Palestinian human rights organizations, accusing them of facilitating International Criminal Court efforts to investigate Israeli officials. The move targets Al-Haq, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, and the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights for their role in documenting alleged war crimes.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the measure by stating the groups engaged in attempts to prosecute Israeli nationals without the state's consent. These organizations were instrumental in petitioning the ICC to issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials regarding actions in the Gaza Strip. The sanctions follow a broader pattern of US pressure on the court, which has included penalties against ICC judges who authorized warrants against Israeli leadership.

Human rights advocates and international observers have condemned the decision as an attempt to silence documentation of the conflict. Amnesty International’s Erika Guevara-Rosas labeled the move a "shameful assault on human rights," while groups like B'Tselem voiced full solidarity with the targeted monitors. Despite the threat of financial and operational isolation, representatives for the sanctioned groups, including Basel Al-Sourani of the PCHR, stated their intent to continue their work and maintain engagement with international legal bodies to hold perpetrators accountable.
