US Hits Record Low in Global Press Freedom Rankings

The United States has plummeted to 64th place in the latest Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, marking its lowest position ever. The decline follows a period of escalating hostility from the Trump administration, which has openly threatened journalists with imprisonment and treason charges while dismantling public broadcasting entities.

US Hits Record Low in Global Press Freedom Rankings

The drop of seven spots in a single year reflects a broader pattern of antagonism toward the press. Clayton Weimers, executive director of the organization’s North America section, described the current political climate as a coordinated war on journalism, noting that the president is effectively pouring gasoline on a fire that has been smoldering for a decade. The report highlights the weaponization of government agencies to target critical outlets and the increased use of litigation to silence dissent.

Physical danger to reporters has also reached concerning levels. Data from the US Press Freedom Tracker reveals that attacks on media professionals doubled in 2025, totaling more than 170 incidents. These confrontations often occur during protests or interactions with law enforcement, signaling a volatile environment for those covering public affairs. While Norway retains the top spot globally due to its robust legal protections, over half of the countries monitored by the index now fall into the 'difficult' or 'very serious' categories, underscoring a global retreat from press independence.
