Majority of Americans View DOJ as Trump’s Political Weapon

Fifty-five percent of American adults believe President Donald Trump is utilizing federal law enforcement to target political enemies, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The survey highlights a growing public perception that the Department of Justice has shifted from a neutral arbiter of law into a mechanism for presidential retribution.

The findings arrive as high-profile critics, including former FBI Director James Comey, former adviser John Bolton, and New York Attorney General Letitia James, face active criminal charges. Supporters of the "Not Above the Law" coalition argue these prosecutions represent a pattern of retaliation, noting that each individual was targeted following public demands from the president for their indictment. The coalition described the department as a "personal revenge machine," warning that the erosion of institutional neutrality transcends traditional party lines, given that three in ten Republicans surveyed also expressed concern over the politicization of the agency.

Legal challenges are mounting, with defense teams for Comey and James seeking to dismiss their cases by questioning the legitimacy of judicial appointments, specifically targeting interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan. Beyond individual cases, the broader climate of political division is weighing heavily on the electorate. Public anxiety regarding national conflict has risen to 43%, while 61% of respondents express deep skepticism toward the fairness of redistricting processes ahead of upcoming midterm elections. As the administration expands its reach—including the designation of antifa as a domestic terrorist group—critics warn that the current use of executive authority poses significant risks to civil liberties and the long-term stability of federal institutions.
