House Democrats Denounce Federal Raid on Ilhan Omar's Home

A bloc of 175 House Democrats joined forces Monday to condemn the Department of Homeland Security’s search of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s Washington home. Lawmakers characterized the October 12 operation as a politically motivated attempt to influence the upcoming November 3 elections through the weaponization of federal law enforcement.

The search warrant, executed by DHS agents while early voting was underway in Minnesota, resulted in the seizure of documents, personal phone records, a passport, and DNA samples. In a formal letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the signatories labeled the raid a dramatic escalation of a long-standing campaign against the four-term congresswoman. The probe into Omar reportedly centers on immigration paperwork filed by her late father decades ago.

Led by prominent figures including Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Jamie Raskin, and Bennie Thompson, the group argued that the timing of the search—just 22 days before the election—threatens the integrity of the democratic process. The letter contends that the administration’s actions prioritize retribution over justice, noting that the investigation targets records from when Omar was a minor. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has previously signaled that if Democrats reclaim the chamber, the party will launch an expansive oversight agenda, with impeachment remaining a potential tool for addressing such executive actions.
