Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, was pushed out of the Democratic National Committee over a year ago for advocating that the party support primary challengers against establishment incumbents. He now points to a string of progressive wins—most notably in Michigan, where Dr. Abdul El-Sayed overcame $60 million in outside spending—as evidence that his reformist agenda resonates with voters.
Since his departure, Hogg has focused on his organization, Leaders We Deserve. The group, which relies primarily on small-dollar donations, reports an 18-1 record for its candidates this cycle. Recent successes include the nominations of Donavan McKinney in Michigan, Claire Valdez in New York, and Randy Villegas in California. These candidates campaign on platforms including Medicare for All and increased taxes on the wealthy, directly challenging the party's traditional status quo.
