BT Group Shares Climb as Workforce Cuts Boost Profitability

BT Group shares surged 5.5% to 244.30 pence on Thursday after the telecommunications giant posted an 809 million pound net profit for the first half of fiscal 2027. The gains follow a aggressive restructuring phase that saw the company trim its total workforce by 11% to 90,000 employees.

Revenue for the period rose slightly to 8.75 billion pounds, a 0.6% increase that underscores the firm's push to stabilize finances while rolling out high-speed fiber infrastructure. By focusing on cost-efficiency, BT secured 312 million pounds in savings over the six months ending in September, keeping its broader plan to reach 3.5 billion pounds in annualized savings by 2030 on schedule.

Operational metrics provided a secondary catalyst for investor confidence. BT added 1.1 million Openreach fiber customers, pushing the take-up rate to 41%. While the company continues to shed broadband lines, the pace of these losses slowed to 175,000 in the second quarter, down from 192,000 in the first. Analysts at Bernstein suggested this deceleration could signal potential upside for the company’s full-year performance targets.

Management reaffirmed its annual guidance, projecting adjusted revenue between 17.1 billion and 17.6 billion pounds alongside normalized free cash flow of roughly 2.0 billion pounds. To reward shareholders, the firm increased its interim dividend to 2.50 pence per share. Keith Bowman of Interactive Investor noted that as the fiber network buildout nears completion, declining capital expenditure should further bolster cash flows and provide room for debt reduction or additional dividend hikes.
