Albemarle Returns to Profit on Surging Lithium Demand

A 48% jump in global lithium demand through August has propelled Albemarle back into the black, helping the specialty chemicals firm secure a $296.8 million profit for the third quarter. This sharp reversal follows a $160.7 million loss during the same period last year, signaling a robust recovery for the producer.

The company’s revenue climbed 19% to $1.55 billion, outperforming analyst expectations of $1.52 billion. Much of this growth originated from a 68% price increase within the energy-storage business, complemented by rising volumes in the specialties division. Adjusted earnings reached $2.58 a share, edging past the $2.53 forecast set by FactSet analysts.

Chief Executive Officer Kent Masters pointed to the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors as the primary drivers of this industrial momentum. Alongside the financial gains, Albemarle reduced its full-year capital expenditure guidance to a range of $300 million to $350 million, down from a previous target of $500 million. The company credited this shift to ongoing improvements in capital efficiency.
