China Southern Airlines reported a net loss of 609 million yuan for the third quarter, a sharp reversal from its profitable performance a year ago. Meanwhile, China Eastern and Air China managed to remain in the black for the period, though both saw their quarterly profits crater by 98% and 93% respectively. These state-owned carriers blame the surge in jet fuel prices for eroding margins that were already under pressure from stagnant ticket pricing power.
Analysts at DBS Group Research suggest the industry is caught in a cycle of overcapacity, where fuller cabins fail to offset rising operational expenses. Raising ticket prices risks driving travelers toward domestic high-speed rail, leaving airlines with limited room to maneuver. Although revenue grew marginally across the board, the Civil Aviation Administration of China reports that total passenger volume for the first nine months of 2026 crawled up by only 2%.
