Alphabet Shares Plummet as AI Spending Concerns Grip Wall Street

October 29 marked a grim milestone for Alphabet, as the tech giant saw its market valuation evaporate by roughly $500 billion in a single session. The massive sell-off rippled across the Nasdaq, signaling a sharp shift in investor confidence regarding the long-term profitability of aggressive artificial intelligence investments.

The catalyst for the market retreat was a third-quarter earnings report that failed to meet expectations. Google Services, which encompasses search advertising and YouTube, posted $96.3 billion in revenue, falling short of the $98.5 billion forecast by analysts. More concerning to shareholders was the deceleration in search revenue growth, which slowed to 12% from the 19% pace recorded earlier this year.

Alphabet is currently funneling capital into data centers and new AI models, leading to higher operating expenses and negative free cash flow. While investors previously overlooked these costs due to the resilience of core business profits, that margin of safety is narrowing. Mike O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading, noted that the company has demonstrated a clear vulnerability to its own AI strategy. Adding to the technical pressure, the stock has formed a "death cross," where its short-term price average dips below the long-term trend, a development often interpreted by analysts as a harbinger of further downward momentum.
