Dollar General Faces Multistate Lawsuit Over Deceptive Pricing

Shoppers at Dollar General have been paying more at the register than the prices displayed on store shelves, prompting a federal lawsuit. The Federal Trade Commission and 20 states allege the discount chain systematically misled consumers, resulting in millions of dollars in overcharges despite mounting internal warnings and thousands of customer complaints.

Dollar General Faces Multistate Lawsuit Over Deceptive Pricing

The complaint filed in a Tennessee federal court highlights a persistent pattern of pricing discrepancies that the company failed to rectify. Between January 2023 and March 2026, internal records show more than 29,000 complaints regarding these price gaps. Authorities contend that Dollar General maintained extensive corporate knowledge of the issue while allowing the practice to continue, effectively betraying the trust of its budget-conscious customer base.

Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, emphasized the severity of the allegations, noting that the chain exploited consumers who rely on its low-price reputation. The coalition of states pursuing the litigation includes California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee, the latter being the site of the company's headquarters. Dollar General has not yet provided a formal response to the legal action.
