Freeport-McMoRan Profits Surge on Copper and Molybdenum Price Rally

A 73% jump in third-quarter profit highlights the impact of rallying metal markets on Freeport-McMoRan’s bottom line. The Phoenix-based mining giant reported earnings of $1.17 billion, comfortably outpacing analyst expectations as the average realized price for its copper soared to $6.54 per pound.

The company’s quarterly performance reached 81 cents per share, a significant climb from the 46 cents recorded during the same period last year. Adjusted earnings hit 88 cents, exceeding the 82-cent consensus estimate tracked by FactSet. Revenue followed a similar upward trajectory, climbing to $7.55 billion from $6.97 billion, again surpassing Wall Street projections of $7.36 billion.

Chief Executive Kathleen Quirk attributed the robust financial results to favorable commodity pricing. While the firm actually saw a decline in copper output compared to the previous year, the surging market value of the metal more than compensated for the volume dip. Molybdenum production remained steady, yet like copper, it benefited from a sustained rise in market prices, further bolstering the company's margins.
