Teck Resources Scales Back Production as Highland Valley Strike Begins

More than 1,000 workers at the Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia walked off the job Saturday, halting full-scale production after contract negotiations between Teck Resources and the United Steelworkers local 7619 collapsed.

Operations at the open-pit site, located 31 miles southwest of Kamloops, are running at a reduced capacity as management implements contingency plans focused on safety and environmental oversight. Teck reported that the total impact on output hinges on the duration of the industrial action, though the facility remains a critical asset for the company, contributing 127,100 metric tons to its 453,500-ton copper production last year.

The strike follows a 72-hour notice issued by the union, which represents roughly 1,200 employees at the site. While the company submitted a revised monetary offer last Tuesday and withdrew one concession, the union maintained that the proposal failed to meet membership expectations, citing lingering demands for concessions that kept the two sides at an impasse. Teck stated it remains committed to securing a collective agreement that balances employee compensation with the long-term viability of the operation.
