Gaza Toddler Left Orphaned After Israeli Strike Kills Mother

A Palestinian toddler was left orphaned Wednesday after an Israeli helicopter strike on a Gaza City apartment complex burned her mother alive. The attack in the Rimal neighborhood occurred at 3:48 a.m., leaving the young child, Maryam Ahmed Ghanem, to witness the death of her mother, Reem Asaad Awad.

Journalist Ali al-Jaafrawi, who arrived at the scene shortly after the strike, described the harrowing rescue effort amidst thick smoke and flames. He managed to pull the toddler from the burning apartment before losing consciousness from smoke inhalation. The child is currently receiving treatment for severe burns at al-Shifa Hospital, a facility struggling to function following repeated Israeli raids. Palestinian author Mosab Abu Toha, who visited the hospital, reported that the girl repeatedly asks for her mother while suffering from her injuries.

Israeli officials stated they are investigating the strike, alleging without evidence that the target was a Hamas member. The attack has drawn sharp criticism from groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which condemned the continued U.S. military and diplomatic support for Israel's campaign. Historian Assal Rad noted a stark disparity in Western media coverage, arguing that such acts of violence against Palestinians often fail to reach the front pages of major outlets. Maryam Ghanem is now among the more than 56,000 children in Gaza who have lost at least one parent since the conflict began.
