DoorDash pivots to text-based AI ordering

At the Dash Forward 2026 event, DoorDash unveiled an AI agent capable of processing food orders directly through text messages. By bypassing the traditional app interface, the company aims to streamline the ordering process, allowing users to build carts, secure deals, and coordinate group meals within a simple chat thread.

The system learns individual preferences over time, remembering recurring orders and suggesting local options based on user history. Beyond standard delivery, the agent can analyze photos of a user’s refrigerator to identify missing ingredients for recipes and trigger immediate delivery for those specific items. This feature is currently limited to a beta version for U.S. iPhone users, accessible via a waitlist.

Co-founder Andy Fang described the shift as a new paradigm for digital interaction, positioning DoorDash against emerging competitors like Instinct and Muse. Alongside the AI rollout, the company introduced drone delivery services that currently average under five minutes in early trials, as well as a new $7.99 at-home return service for retail goods.
