Mars Scraps Pop-Tarts BuzzBallz Following Public Health Backlash

Thirty public health advocacy groups have forced a swift retreat from Mars, which is pulling its Pop-Tarts-branded BuzzBallz cocktails just one month after their release. The decision follows intense criticism regarding the potential for the alcohol-infused products to attract underage consumers, marking a sudden end to the controversial cross-brand experiment.

The limited-edition drinks, available in Frosted S’mores and Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon, featured a 15% alcohol content. Mike Marshall, CEO of the US Alcohol Policy Alliance, spearheaded the opposition, arguing that iconic childhood brands should not normalize alcohol consumption for younger demographics. Mars, which inherited the partnership through its acquisition of Kellanova in December 2025, confirmed it will not pursue future alcohol collaborations involving the Pop-Tarts label.

Sazerac, the owner of BuzzBallz, maintained that the products were marketed exclusively to legal-age adults and carried clear labeling. Mars attempted to defend the strategy by noting that adult consumption accounts for the majority of Pop-Tarts sales. The failed venture highlights the industry's broader struggle to capture the interest of younger adults, whose alcohol consumption has dropped to 50% from 58% over the last three years, according to Gallup data. While the wider market pivots toward premixed cocktails, which have seen a 30% surge in sales, this specific attempt to leverage nostalgia has officially fizzled.
