The Iced Coffee Debate and Other Job Interview Pitfalls

A viral TikTok from recruiter Caitlin Wehniainen has ignited a generational clash over job interview etiquette, specifically whether carrying an iced coffee signals a lack of professional seriousness. While the debate rages online, career experts suggest that while a beverage is rarely a dealbreaker, it remains a risky distraction.

The Iced Coffee Debate and Other Job Interview Pitfalls

Wehniainen, who recruits for Fortune 500 corporations, argues that arriving with a drink makes a candidate appear disorganized, as if the interview is merely an errand between stops. The assertion triggered thousands of comments, with younger applicants defending the practice as a harmless habit while older professionals maintain that it undermines the formality of the meeting. The discourse even prompted a wave of satirical videos mocking the perceived absurdity of the new office standard.

Vicki Salemi, a career expert at Monster, notes that traditional etiquette dictates arriving empty-handed. While she does not believe a coffee cup should disqualify a candidate, she advises playing it safe by finishing the beverage beforehand. According to Salemi, a candidate’s ultimate success rests on their engagement and preparation, yet small optics still influence first impressions.

Beyond the coffee debate, Salemi warns that more egregious behavior remains a genuine threat to job prospects. She recounts instances of candidates attempting to eat messy meals during scheduled breaks, only to be caught off guard by early-arriving interviewers. Rudeness toward office staff or failing to communicate delays are far more damaging than a drink in hand. Ultimately, professional memory often favors the candidate who avoids these avoidable social stumbles, regardless of their technical qualifications.
