U.S. Takes Equity Stakes in Quantum Startups via $300 Million Grant

The U.S. Department of Commerce is securing minority equity stakes in D-Wave Quantum, Rigetti Computing, and Quantinuum as part of a $300 million federal funding package. This move marks a strategic shift to bolster domestic supply chains for advanced hardware by directly linking research grants to government ownership.

U.S. Takes Equity Stakes in Quantum Startups via $300 Million Grant

Each company is slated to receive $100 million in research-and-development funding under the CHIPS Act. Investors responded positively to the announcement, with Quantinuum shares rising 5.5%, D-Wave climbing 9.1%, and Rigetti advancing 6.4% on Tuesday.

The capital infusion targets specific technical barriers. Rigetti plans to focus on scaling superconducting processors and expanding cryogenic capacity. D-Wave, headquartered in Palo Alto, intends to accelerate the prototyping of advanced semiconductor technology. Meanwhile, Quantinuum is leveraging the grant to build integrated photonics engines, supported by manufacturing partnerships with GlobalFoundries and Monarch Quantum.

GlobalFoundries is separately finalizing its own expansion efforts, securing a $375 million agreement to support the transition of quantum hardware from laboratory prototypes to commercial-scale manufacturing. This follows a previous July agreement where the Commerce Department committed $300 million to the firm for silicon photonics development, further cementing the government's role in the domestic quantum ecosystem.
