Snap Bets Its Future on $2,195 Augmented Reality Glasses

When CEO Evan Spiegel wore his company’s new smart glasses during a CNBC interview in June, the internet response was immediate and biting. Critics labeled the eyewear “laughably ugly” and questioned if the product launch was a joke, highlighting the steep mountain Snap must climb to justify its high-priced hardware gamble.

Spiegel remains undeterred by the public mockery, having poured years of resources into the device despite internal friction. The glasses, set for an official debut on September 16, represent a strategic pivot aimed at reducing Snap’s dependence on its flagship social media app. Internally, the project has sparked debate among leadership, with some executives questioning whether the CEO is dedicating too much attention to experimental hardware while the core Snapchat platform struggles with declining North American daily users and a lack of annual profit.

Snap’s financial landscape adds pressure to the hardware launch. With the company’s stock down over 30% this year and a wave of high-level executive departures, the glasses serve as a high-stakes test of investor confidence. While Meta has found success with its $379 Ray-Ban smart glasses, selling over two million units, Snap’s entry carries a significantly higher price tag. A company spokesperson defended the strategy, noting a 19% revenue increase and rising user engagement, asserting that the controversial CNBC appearance successfully drove interest in the upcoming augmented reality technology.
