Sanders Accuses Trump of Using Postal Service to Rig Midterms

Senator Bernie Sanders has labeled recent changes to United States Postal Service operations an "authoritarian power grab," alleging that the Trump administration is weaponizing mail delivery systems to influence the upcoming midterm elections and suppress participation among voters who oppose the president’s current political agenda.

The criticism follows a whistleblower disclosure suggesting that new postal protocols, implemented under a March executive order, could obstruct the delivery of millions of ballots. Sanders characterized the move as a direct assault on the constitutional framework of state-run elections, arguing that the administration seeks to circumvent federal checks to consolidate control over the voting process. He further dismissed claims of widespread voter fraud, noting that the president himself has utilized mail-in voting in Florida this year.

Investigations by ProPublica corroborate concerns from within the agency, revealing that internal meetings highlighted how a single miscoded ballot could potentially stall massive mailings, such as the two million ballots typically processed for Maricopa County, Arizona. While a federal court has currently blocked the enforcement of these new rules, the administration continues to pursue legal pathways to reinstate them. In response, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee sent a formal letter to Postmaster General David Steiner, demanding an immediate cessation of what they described as an illegal scheme to manipulate federal election outcomes.
