IMF Warns Global Debt Crisis Looms Amid Geopolitical Instability

Global public debt has surged to levels unseen since the aftermath of World War II, reaching nearly 100% of worldwide GDP. Kristalina Georgieva, head of the International Monetary Fund, warned that this fiscal pressure, compounded by volatile energy markets and rising interest rates, poses a persistent threat to global economic stability.

IMF Warns Global Debt Crisis Looms Amid Geopolitical Instability

The IMF managing director highlighted that climbing interest rates in advanced economies are dragging up yield curves globally, effectively neutralizing gains made in emerging markets. This shift occurs alongside a sharp sell-off in government bonds, fueled by renewed inflation fears and potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. With oil prices sensitive to the escalating U.S.-Iran conflict and the bottleneck at the Strait of Hormuz, the challenge of restocking strategic energy reserves has become increasingly urgent.

Energy security concerns are further compounded by the surging electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence development and the seasonal pressures of the approaching winter. As borrowing costs soar, the sustainability of national debt loads remains a primary concern for financial leaders. Georgieva emphasized that while the global economy navigated previous energy shocks with resilience, the convergence of high debt, persistent inflation, and geopolitical friction ensures that the period of economic volatility is far from over.
