Sanders to Trump: Build Your Data Center at Mar-a-Lago

“Trump thinks that every community in America should welcome a data center,” Senator Bernie Sanders remarked on Friday, retorting to the former president’s insistence that towns embrace the massive facilities. “Great idea. Lead by example. Have your friend Elon build one at Mar-a-Lago.”

The sharp exchange follows Trump’s recent claims that local opposition to AI-driven industrial expansion is futile. Despite a Thursday poll indicating that 75% of Americans oppose large-scale data centers in their neighborhoods, Trump maintains that governors and mayors should aggressively pursue such projects, suggesting that communities simply need better public relations to appreciate them.

Critics argue the push for these facilities ignores profound environmental and economic risks. In Palm Beach County, for instance, a proposed 600-megawatt project known as Project Tango faced intense backlash from residents and conservationists concerned about water scarcity, noise pollution, and damage to the Everglades ecosystem. That specific proposal was rejected by county commissioners in a 5-1 vote last month, even by those who otherwise support Trump politically. As Silicon Valley giants lobby for deregulation, the divide between local concerns and national policy continues to intensify.
