Margot Robbie’s $50 Million Barbie Payday Stalls Sequel Negotiations

Fifty million dollars in salary and production bonuses turned Margot Robbie into the face of a record-breaking box office phenomenon. Yet, this historic payday has become a primary hurdle for Warner Bros., as the studio struggles to secure the core creative team for a follow-up to the 2023 hit.

Margot Robbie’s $50 Million Barbie Payday Stalls Sequel Negotiations

The studio’s attempts to greenlight a sequel have hit a wall, with the creative team—including Robbie, Ryan Gosling, director Greta Gerwig, and writer Noah Baumbach—reportedly rejecting more than six offers over the past three years. While Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has presented what sources describe as "life-changing money," internal disagreements over the valuation of individual contributions persist. Insiders suggest that while the cumulative compensation package is record-breaking, the breakdown per person has not reached the expectations of the talent involved.

Ryan Gosling is reportedly seeking $20 million to reprise his role as Ken, reflecting the high stakes of contract negotiations. Despite the financial impasse, Gerwig and Baumbach have confirmed they possess a conceptual framework for a potential follow-up. However, they remain unwilling to commit to a script until a formal contract is finalized. Robbie, who previously emphasized that she poured everything into the original film, has expressed public skepticism about the necessity of a sequel, noting that the success of the first installment proved that original intellectual property can still command massive global audiences.
