Eyebot Brings 90-Second Vision Tests to Retail Aisles

With over 40,000 vacant optometrist positions across the United States, patients often wait months for a routine vision exam. Matthias Hofmann, CEO of Eyebot, is tackling this supply-demand bottleneck by deploying self-service kiosks in major retail stores, allowing shoppers to secure an eyeglass prescription in roughly 90 seconds while running errands.

Hofmann’s pivot to physical kiosks follows a decade of testing smartphone-based solutions that failed to gain consumer traction. While early digital tools were technically accurate, they demanded too much user effort to be viable. Hofmann realized that the primary barrier to vision care was not the technology itself, but the friction of scheduling and the lack of convenience. By embedding the testing process into the existing retail flow at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, the startup aims to provide a frictionless alternative to traditional office visits.

Industry reception remains cautious, with some optometrists expressing concern that users might conflate a quick prescription update with a comprehensive medical exam. Hofmann maintains that the kiosks are not intended to replace doctors. Instead, every generated prescription undergoes review by a licensed professional, and the system is designed to refer patients requiring specialized care to doctors. For the founder, the ultimate goal is to provide a point of access for underserved populations, such as those working multiple jobs without the flexibility to navigate standard appointment-based medical systems.
